SNAKE IN A BATH

How would you like to find a snake in your bath? A nasty one too!
He had just moved into a new house, which had been empty for so long that everything was in a terrible mess. Aan and I decided we would clean the bath first, so we set to, and turned on the tap. Suddenly, to my horror, a snake’s head appeared in the plug-hole, then out slithered the rest of his long thin body. He twisted and turned on the slippery bottom of the bath, spitting and hissing at us.
For an instant I stood there quite paralysed. Then I yelled for my husband, who luckily came running and killed the snake with the handle of a broom. Anna, who was only three at the time, was quite interested in the whole business. Indeed I had to pull her out of the way or she’d probably have leant over the bath to get a better look!
Ever since then I’ve always put the plug in the firmly before running the bath water.

ACTIVE READING

Most of us have to read a certain amount of material for one reason or other: perhaps we are taking a course; perhaps we need to read something for work, perhaps we are giving a talk on one an outside interest to a group or club. All too often we approach such an assignment with the idea of reading a certain number of pages, or starting at the beginning and reading page by page until we have completed the reading. While this approach does get the reading over with, it does not encourage you think about what you are reading-to participate activity.
People who enjoy reading have learned to look for clues or key ideas as they read. They often do this without realizing it, but it is part of what make reading fun. If you have never tried the technique, you might want to see how it works. In some ways it’s like taking a trip someplace you’ve never been. You would  not just start off and you have were going in the right directions; you would probably check a road map carefully to see the directions you want to ago, the types of a roads, the location of towns or other special points. It’s the same with reading. If you have some ideas of what is included in the material and how it presented, you will get more out of your reading and enjoy it more. You can do this by looking over the reading briefly in a methodological way to see the main points of the chapter or article.

THE GOLDEN AX

A long time ago, two brothers lived together in a small village. The younger brother was called Li Gang, and the older was called Li Ping.

Suddenly an old man appeared in front of him and asked why he was crying. After Li Gang explained what had happened, the old man disappeared. When he returned, he was carrying a silver ax. Li Gang looked at it and said that it was not his. Then the old man brought another ax that was made of gold. But Li Gang said that one wasn’t his either.
Finally, the old man showed him his iron ax. Li Gang said “Yes, that’s it. That’s the ax I lost.” The old man told him that because he was an honest boy, he could have to only his own ax but also the gold ax.

HOW DO SEASONS HAPPEN?

Seasons come to us regularly. We have probably noticed that it gets warmer in the summer or dry season while it gets colder in the winter or wet season. However, do we know how these seasons change?
Seasons happen and change every year. This happen because the earth tilts back and forth as it goes around e sun. During the summer, the earth tilts toward the sun. It makes half of the earth hotter. This condition is what we call summer. During the other half of the year, the earth tilts away from the sun. As a result, it makes that half of the earth cooler. This cool condition is then what we call winter.

MAKING A KITE

Flying a kite is an interesting activity and making your own kite is easy. Prepare the following materials: butchers cord; scotch tape or glue; one sheet of strong paper; two strong straight wooden stick of bamboo; marker, paint or crayons. After you have prepared the materials, follow the simple direction below:
First, make a cross with the two sticks, with the shorter stick placed horizontally across the longer stick. Then, tie the two sticks together with the string in such a way as to make sure that they are at right angles to each other. Next, cut a notch at each end of the sticks. Make it deep enough for the type of string you are using to fit into. After that, cut a piece of string long enough to stretch all around the kite frame. Then, lay the sail materials flat and place the stick frame face down on top. Cut around it, leaving about 2-3 cm for a margin, fold these edges over and glue it down so that the materials is tight. Make it tail by tying a small ribbon roughly every 10 cm along the length of string. And finally, decorate your kite with marker.

PELICAN

The white pelican is one of the most successful fish-eating birds. The success is in largely due to its command hunting behavior. A group, perhaps to dozen birds, will gather in a curved arc some distance offshore. The bird than begin to move forward towards to shore, beating the water furiously with their wings, driving the fish before them.
When the water is shallow enough for the birds to reach the fish, the formation breaks up as each birds dips its bill into the water to scoop up its meal. As the bird lifts its head, the water drains from its bill leaving the fish which are then swallowed.
Pelicans are among the oldest group of the birds. Fossils of this genus have been found dating back 40 million years.
