THE PRAMBANAN TEMPLE

The prambanan temple lies about 45kms west of Surakarta, just beside the road between Yogyakarta and Surakarta. It can be reached by public transportation from Surakarta or Yogyakarta.
The Prambanan temple site is a large ground with a number of Hindu Shrine with beautiful Stupas, statues and relief. It s devoted to Syiwa, the Chief God. In the centre of Syiwa, while the west one contains the statue of Durga, Syiwa’s beautiful wife. This Shine is also known as Candi Rarrajonggrang.
On the panels of the terraces there are beautiful reliefs narrating the Ramayana story. That’s why an open theater has been built in the grounds of the temple where the Ramayana ballet performances are held on full moon nights during May throughout October.
The second Shrine size which lies south of Candi Rarrajonggrang is devoted to Wisynu, the keeper. Inside the Shrine there is a statue of Wisynu three faces. This Shrine is called candi Trumurti (the three faces) and was restored in 1986. The other smaller Shrine contains statues of Brahma, nandi (Syiwa’s riding-ox) and others.
The whole site of candi Prambanan is being restored to build a beautiful candi Prambanan Tourist Park. Around the grounds of the temple there are a lot of stands selling handcrafts and all kind of souvenirs.
